A Window to the World - The Chi Mei Museum

Founder Wen-lung Hsu established the Chi Mei Museum in 1992 to provide the general public free access to world-class artwork. The 72,000 square foot museum accommodates rich and diverse collections including ancient artifacts, violins crafted by world-famous instrument makers, centuries-old Japanese samurai swords, and classic paintings from the Renaissance and later artistic movements. Also in the museum’s collection are a large number of bird and animal specimens. At the Chi Mei Museum, visitors can experience the finest masterpieces from different civilizations and cultures without leaving Taiwan, thus offering a broad, window-like view on the world.

Beautiful Music – The Chimei Philharmonic Orchestra

It has been a long-time dream of Mr. Wen-Lung Hsu to promote understanding and appreciation of classical music among the general public in Taiwan. Hence, CHIMEI has founded a number of classical music ensembles over the years, including the Tainan Opera Orchestra, the Chimei Mandolin Orchestra, and the Chimei Symphony Orchestra.
Established in 2003, the Chimei Symphony Orchestra has appeared in concert halls all over Taiwan and abroad. With regular tours every year, the orchestra achieved many impressive accomplishments. As a result, in 2007, CHIMEI decided to reorganize and expand the orchestra. It held auditions in search of new professional musicians. The group was renamed the Chimei Philharmonic Orchestra, symbolizing a new milestone in CHIMEI’s dedication and devotion to the art and music of Taiwan.

Boasting 400-odd prestigious violins acquired from all over the world, the Chi Mei Culture Foundation is currently the private organization with the largest violin collection. It frequently lends out collected violins to musicians in the hope that, by representing the fine qualities of these antique instruments, the audience may enjoy the beautiful violin sounds that were available centuries ago.

Cultural Heritage – The Chimei Arts Award

In 1989, Mr. Wen-Lung Hsu initiated the Chimei Arts Award, anticipating that the award would make a positive contribution towards the cultivation of new talent in the arts. CHIMEI could thus play its part in the promotion of artistic and cultural activity in Taiwan. The award has made it possible for many young people to concentrate their creative energies on their art, without being burdened by financial worries.

Eco-friendly Hand-made Soap Made from Recycled Oil

《Environmental initiatives》
Soap is made by mixing fat or oil with an alkaline base. During the process of soap production, there is no air pollution or toxic waste, making soap making an eco-friendly industry. Using recycled cooking oil to produce soap has at least two big advantages: first, it prevents potential environmental pollution caused by inappropriate disposal of cooking oil, and second, it reduces people’s dependence on detergents, which are toxic pollutants to the waters.

《Giving Back to Society》
In addition to the long-term contribution to the preservation and promotion of the arts, the Chi Mei Group now also focuses on environmental preservation and recently founded the Lian Ci Development Corp. to devote itself to environmental protection work. Lian Ci makes soap from recycled cooking oil as a way to give back to the society.

《Caring for the Needy》
In the future, job opportunities such as soap packaging will be created to assist physically and mentally challenged people to live a more independent life with a stable income and a sense of contribution to society.

《The Pursuit of Happiness》
As we pursue a fulfilling life of happiness, we should provide the same opportunities for future generations as well. Our support of eco-friendly soap made from recycled materials manifests our friendliness to the environment and our care for the underprivileged, as well as future generations.

Community Involvement

Sponsoring LCD Displays in Public Areas

CHIMEI assumed the sponsorship to brace itself for the era of digital TV while fulfilling the purpose of the state-initiated Media Digitalization Project: creating for the general public an excellent Internet-based lifestyle. In August 2005, CHIMEI began sponsoring numerous LCD displays in public areas, including airports and exhibition facilities to embrace the new digital TV era and support Taiwan government’s digital media programs. For example, traditional CRT flight information displays and airport information service displays at Taipei Songshan Airport, Tainan Airport, Kaohsiung International Airport and Kaohsiung Domestic Airport have been replaced by Chi Mei LCD displays that are thinner, lighter, more energy-efficient, and feature better image quality. Through CHIMEI’s efforts to promote the installation of LCD displays in public areas, the general public can enjoy instant, clearer, more enriched, visual images. Meanwhile, it is also a clear demonstration of Taiwan’s lead in information technology hardware manufacturing. In addition to airports, CHIMEI also sponsors multimedia LCD displays in art museums including the National Museum of History, Angel Art Gallery, National Palace Museum and other public art spaces so that people can appreciate artwork in different ways.

Joint Research Projects with Cheng Kung University and Chiao Tung University's Tainan Campus

In 2004 Chi Mei Group donated NT$ 270 million to the construction of the Chi Mei Building at Cheng Kung University, and in 2008, NT$ 460 million to the construction of the Chi Mei Building on the Chiao Tung University's Tainan Campus. It is CHIMEI’s hope that CHIMEI can help facilitate educational development and talent cultivation in coordination with these two universities. In addition to the buildings, CMO also founded a Joint Research Project Committee to encourage collaboration projects between industry and academia, with the hope to leverage both universities’ advantages in research, and facilitate a Southern Taiwan Science Park that will become the world’s largest optoelectronics technology cluster.
